- Vascular Surgery
Dr Bernie Bourke is senior vascular surgeon on the NSW Central Coast, having introduced that discipline to the region in January 1986. He is a graduate of the University of Sydney, Medical School. He completed FRACS training in general surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital and then spent 3 years as senior vascular registrar to Professor Roger Greenhalgh at Charing Cross Hospital in London.
On return to Australia he spent a 15 month period in vascular research at the Royal North Shore Hospital prior to commencing clinical practice. That research involved endothelial cell seeding of synthetic bypass grafts and developing techniques of radioactive indium -111 labeling of platelets. Results of that research led to a publication in the Journal of Vascular Surgery and to a chapter in Bruno Reichart’s: “Recent Advances in Cardiovascular Surgery” (1989). He was a foundation member of the International Society for Applied Cardiovascular Biology and is a life member of the Surgical Research Society of Australasia. He was awarded an RACS Research Foundation Scholarship in 1985/1986 but could not accept because of clinical commitments. Although in full-time clinical vascular surgical practice, Dr Bourke maintains a strong interest in clinical vascular research and has published and presented on topics related to carotid endarterectomy, infrainguinal arterial bypass and aortic stent grafting.
Dr Bourke has held a number of administrative positions with both the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has chaired the Standards and Relationship portfolio of the ANZSVS and is the current chair of the Audit & CPD Committee. He was also chair of the RACS Digital Imaging working party which was a multi-disciplinary party involving the RACS, the RANZCR, ADIA and various imaging associations to manage the implementation of Digital Imaging into medical, and in particular, surgical practice. As chair of the Audit & CPD sub-committee, Dr Bourke has been intimately involved with the development of the Australasian Vascular Audit which is a bi-national audit of complete vascular surgical practice. Dr Bourke was admitted to the Court of Examiners in Vascular Surgery in 2005. He has declined an invitation by his co-examiners to become deputy and then senior examiner in vascular surgery due to a conflict of interest which will arise in subsequent years. Dr Bourke also represents the ANZSVS and the RACS on vascular diagnostic imaging committees with the federal Department of Health and Ageing and is a member of the Steering Committee for accreditation of diagnostic imaging practices. He also acts as a referee for the Healthcare Complaints unit and for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery.
